Sign a Petition to Support Green Building

Since the 1990s, green building has become a booming industry due in part to the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard. Although Weyerhaeuser and other North American timber companies can support green building by providing wood fiber from their sustainably managed timberlands, LEED's restrictive rating system jeopardizes that role. Currently, LEED recognizes wood only if it is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This ignores trees grown under independent, respectable and credible standards such the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Canadian Standards Association, and American Tree Farm System. Certification that recognizes SFI and CSA — standards Weyerhaeuser uses in North America — benefits the environment, the economy and consumers. Sign this petition and tell USGBC to open the LEED rating system to all credible forest certification standards.
